How Large Should a QR Code Be? Sizing Guide for Print and Screens

As a general rule, use the 10:1 Distance-to-Size Ratio: the minimum width of your printed QR code should be 1/10th of the expected distance between the user's phone camera and the code.

Minimum Absolute Size: 20 mm × 20 mm (0.8 in × 0.8 in) for close-range handheld materials.

One of the most frequent printing mistakes is sizing a QR code too small to fit aesthetically into a graphic layout. While a 10mm QR code might look subtle and minimalist in Adobe InDesign, a budget smartphone camera under poor indoor lighting will struggle or fail entirely to focus on it.

Here is the engineering breakdown of how to calculate the correct QR code size for any physical print or digital screen.

The 10:1 Scanning Distance Ratio

The optical physics of standard mobile smartphone cameras (typically 24mm to 28mm equivalent focal length lenses) dictate that a QR code must occupy a sufficient portion of the camera sensor's pixel grid for decoding algorithms to resolve individual modules.

Use this simple formula:

The Critical Role of the Quiet Zone

Sizing does not end at the black pixels. The ISO/IEC 18004 specification strictly mandates a Quiet Zone: a clear border of solid background color around the entire perimeter of the code measuring at least 4 modules wide.

  • If your QR code is 25mm wide and consists of 25 modules, each module is 1mm wide.
  • Your quiet zone must therefore be at least 4mm on all four sides.
  • Placing text, decorative borders, or imagery inside this quiet zone will immediately break the camera's finder pattern edge detection.

Why Dynamic QR Codes Can Be Printed Smaller

As explained in our guide to Dynamic vs Static QR Codes, static QR codes with long URLs expand into high-density grids (50×50 modules or more). When printed at 25mm, each individual module shrinks to sub-millimetre fractions.

Because a dynamic QR code encodes a short proxy link, the grid stays at Version 2 or 3 (25×25 modules). The modules are twice as large, meaning dynamic codes can be safely printed 20% to 30% smaller than static codes while maintaining equivalent scan speeds.
