QR Code Size Calculator
Calculate recommended dimensions for your QR codes across video screens and physical print. Built on optical distance formulas and adjusted for video compression, frame safe zones, and print surfaces.
* Note: Amber areas indicate potential platform overlays (YouTube scrubber, TikTok right buttons). Always keep the QR code out of these regions.
Viewer & Screen Parameters
Desk-seated viewer working or studying on a portable computer.
Shorter dynamic destinations produce fewer, chunkier dots that scan faster on video screens.
Renders at ~12 cm (4.7 in) on target display. Allows rapid, one-shot camera recognition.
Hard optical threshold. Below this, video compression artifacts and smartphone focal distance cause scan failures.
Viewers need time to notice the QR, reach for and unlock their phone, launch camera, aim, and wait for autofocus recognition.
- Assumes target display has approx. 15" diagonal (330mm width).
- Viewing distance modeled at 0.8 meters (2.6 feet).
- QR payload modeled at LOW density (~25×25 module grid). Shorter dynamic URLs require fewer dots.
- Allocates ~27.9 pixels per module to protect against H.264/H.265 compression blur.
- Moving video behind the QR code can distort corner detection. A solid backing plate is strongly advised.
- Backing Plate Note: Live video movement behind QR modules degrades scan reliability.
Planning recommendation based on optical scanning geometry. Real-world scanning speed depends on viewer phone sensor, ambient lighting, YouTube bitrate, and compression.
Publishing or printing dynamic QR codes?
Do not risk publishing or printing a static QR code that cannot be updated if links break or campaigns evolve. HoldQR gives you lifetime dynamic QR codes that you can redirect anytime—with zero monthly subscriptions.
How to Calculate QR Dimensions
1. Select Your Environment (Video or Print)
Switch between Video & Screens (1080p, 4K, 9:16 Shorts) or Physical Print (menus, packaging, business cards, billboards).
2. Input Distance & Media Parameters
Specify viewing distance, payload data density, and background motion or surface material reflectivity.
3. Receive Dimensions & Safe-Zone Guidance
Get exact pixel sizing for video editors or millimeter dimensions for print shops, plus safe-zone clearance checks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose between Video & Screens and Physical Print sizing?
For video and digital screens, QR dimensions are measured in pixels (px) relative to your video frame resolution (such as 1920×1080 or 3840×2160) and must account for video compression and safe zones. For physical print, sizing is measured in centimeters (cm) or inches (in) and depends on physical viewing distance and printing material.
What is the standard 10:1 distance-to-size optical formula?
The optical rule of thumb for standard QR codes is approximately a 10:1 ratio between distance and size. For example, if someone scans a QR code from 100 cm away, the code should be at least 10 cm wide. For comfortable, instant scanning, an 8:1 or 7.5:1 ratio is strongly recommended.
How big should a QR code be in a YouTube video?
In a 1080p YouTube video, a QR code should be at least 150×150 pixels for desk/laptop viewers and ideally 200×200 to 240×240 pixels. For viewers watching on living room TVs from a couch 2.5–3 meters away, scale the QR code to 450–600 pixels or larger.
What is the absolute smallest size a QR code can be printed on paper?
Under ISO/IEC 18004 standards and smartphone focal distance limits, consumer QR codes should never be printed smaller than 2.0 cm × 2.0 cm (0.8 in × 0.8 in) for standard short URLs. High-density codes (such as vCards) require at least 3.0 cm × 3.0 cm.
Does the length of the URL affect the required size?
Yes. The longer the encoded payload, the more rows and columns of modules must be squeezed into the square. HoldQR dynamic QR codes keep the encoded link short (holdqr.com/q/xyz), which keeps modules large, clean, and scannable at smaller sizes.

The quiet zone is the blank margin a QR code needs on all four sides: at least 4 modules wide. Here is how to calculate it in millimetres and pixels, check an existing file, and fix the layouts that break it.
